Construction of $66.9M community hub moving ahead in Scarborough, Ont.

InstitutionalConstruction is set to move forward on a new community centre in Scarborough, Ont.’s Bridletowne neighbourhood.
Funding commitments from the federal, Ontario and Toronto governments, as well as backing from the YMCA of Greater Toronto and United Way Greater Toronto, pushed long-debated plans for the Bridletowne Neighbourhood Centre over the finish line, Catherine McKenna, Canada’s Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, among others, announced June 10.
The $66.9 million project includes construction of a new 82,440 sq. ft. building, most of which will be occupied by the YMCA. The site will include a pool, gym, a childcare facility and other community space.
Government will pick up the majority of the building costs, with Ottawa spending $26.7 million, Ontario offering $22.3 million and the City of Toronto putting forward $9.8 million. The YMCA and United Way will spend $14.8 million and $3 million, respectively.
